The Numerous Variations of Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Everybody would agree that the best ones are the fluffy and creamy mashed potatoes. This dish is prepared by mashing boiled potatoes and this recipe has started to be used in 1747.

Almost always, floury types of potatoes are used for this recipe, but there can be a time when people want a different texture and they use waxy potatoes. For improving the flavor of the mashed potatoes ingredients such as milk, cream, vegetable oil or butter are added. Eventually, mashed potatoes are seasoned with salt, pepper, herbs, spices, garlic, cheese, bacon, sour cream, onions, mustard, nutmeg, parsley, rosemary, turnip and wasabi.

The French variation of mashed potatoes adds egg yolk to the ingredients list. If some of you want to make low-calorie mashed potatoes, you can change the milk or the cream or the butter with soup stock or broth.

Many cooking chefs offer this recipe as the best one for creamy and fluffy mashed potatoes. You need 2 pounds potatoes, ¾ cup milk or cream, 1 spoon fresh nutmeg, 4 spoons fresh butter cut into cubes, white pepper and fleur du sel.

Peel the potatoes and cut them into even pieces but don’t forget to hold them in water so that they won’t lose color. Steam the potatoes but make sure that the water is not touching them at all. They are supposed to be dry and slightly powdery after the steaming. Grate the nutmeg in the milk and boil it. After that, puree the potatoes with a food mill and repeat the process if it is necessary until you get a smooth, creamy texture. Add warm milk and butter and mix them together until they become one. At the end, you can season the mashed potatoes with salt and pepper.

But, here are some variations you can integrate into your recipe and make different mashed potatoes. Change the milk with half and half or finish the process with fresh chopped chives. After adding the milk you can add dry jack cheese and also crumbled bacon or scallions. Before warming the milk you can add to it wasabi paste or fresh horseradish. Some other ingredients you can add to your mashed potatoes are marscapone, white truffle butter or paste, parmesan and chopped chive. Delicious, isn’t it?

You see that creamy mashed potatoes can get a different taste every time you prepare them. It all depends on your likings and your taste. You choose whether you prefer them spicy or sweet, creamy or not. Just remember that there are many different variations of the mashed potatoes, you should try them all.
